Healthy Lighting

Research team

The research team focuses on the quality of the lighting environment inside and outside buildings. We focus on the impact of daylight and electric lighting on visual comfort and user health. We evaluate light in the outdoor environment with regard to its aesthetic benefits as well as its environmental impact. We create space for the development, testing and optimization of lighting systems.

Thanks to our holistic approach and interdisciplinary cooperation, we are able to assess parameters that are neglected in common practice. We are involved in international expert groups, we want to be a source of information, a channel for access to current knowledge. We offer expert support and recommendations for practice, we are also involved in legislative processes.

MAIN team ACTIVITIES:

  • Analysis of spectral properties of light sources and lighting of existing premises, ranging from nearUV till IR.
  • Analysis of brightness and contrast parameters of the lighting environment, evaluation of the risk of glare from daylight and electric light.
  • Calculations of the effect of light on visual functions and non-visual perception of humans (melanopic parameters) and living nature (U500).
  • Daylighting calculations, design concepts and optimization of the lighting environment in buildings.
  • Indoor light and disturbance assessments for the building quality rating system  ( WELL, BREEAM, …).
  • Concepts and optimization of the lighting environment for specific groups (seniors, children and youth, visually impaired, ...).
  • Work with light sources - testing of light technical parameters, development of luminaires.
