We bring new inspiration for the development of tall timber buildings from Switzerland

A representative of CTU UCEEB attended an international training event at ETH Zurich focusing on examples of tall timber buildings. The result is a range of practical insights and ideas that will contribute to the further development of Czech research in the field of multi-storey timber buildings.

A two-day training event entitled ‘Case Studies on Taller Timber Buildings’ was held in Zurich, Switzerland, organised by the research institution Empa and the prestigious ETH Zurich as part of the European network COST Action CA20139. This event brought together experts from across Europe who are involved in the development, design and construction of tall timber buildings. We were also represented by Tomáš Vančura from our Fire Safety Research Team, who actively drew inspiration for further research activities at our centre.

Participants were presented with specific solutions to problems associated with the design and implementation of multi-storey timber buildings in various European countries – from structural principles to fire safety. The programme also included a visit to a Swiss fire laboratory, where advanced testing methods were demonstrated. Based on the findings from this event, we plan to expand our own testing and development capacities, particularly in the area of fire resistance and more efficient certification of construction systems.

"The knowledge gained can significantly help Czech manufacturers of construction systems, developers and architectural firms that focus on sustainable construction. Tall timber buildings represent an economically and environmentally attractive solution for the future, but their potential remains untapped in the Czech Republic. With this step, CTU UCEEB is moving closer to offering the specific technologies and expertise needed to bring these buildings into wider use," said Tomáš Vančura.
