Buildings – their construction, operation and demolition – contribute significantly to the overall environmental impact of society. Problems related to the environmental impact of buildings have a continental or global reach, and involvement in the international scientific community is key to finding their solutions. The presented project Czech participation in Annex 72 of the International Energy Agency of Buildings will enable the full participation of Czech representatives in the project of the Technological Collaborative Program Energy in Buildings and Communitites of the International Energy Agency Annex 72: Assessing life cycle related environmental impacts caused by buildings, establishing active cooperation with participating top scientific workplaces and the transfer of know-how to Czech professional practice. The Annex 72 project, in which 38 research organizations from around the world are involved, is focused on assessing the need for primary energy, greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental impacts of buildings during the entire life cycle (from the production of building products, through construction, operation to the end of life and dismantling, recycling and disposal of remaining materials).

Its main objectives are: to reach an international consensus on an assessment methodology that will allow taking into account national and regional practices regarding building life cycle data and modelling; improving the linkage of environmental assessment methods with methods used in building design; preparation of documents for defining national and international comparative levels for the assessment of buildings in terms of primary energy needs, greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental impacts of buildings during the entire life cycle; support of individual participating states in the development of national databases of environmental data for construction materials and products; and the preparation of recommendations for national and international standardization bodies with regard to the inclusion of consideration of the entire life cycle of buildings in the prepared standards and other regulations. The main goals of the presented project are the full involvement of the Czech team in the international consortium, participation in impactful publications with foreign co-authors as well as impactful own articles, transfer of acquired know-how to Czech practice using publicly available research reports and their promotion in Czech professional journals and through the final workshop.
