The city of Litoměřice continues on the road to clean heating

Experts from the Czech Technical University in Prague and Charles University met with local citizens at the Litoměřice Castle. Participants were able to find out how the SYNERGYS strategic project is progressing and ask about everything else that interested them about the research into sources of completely renewable heat taking place in the former Jiřík barracks on the Na Vinici Street. The presentation and discussion was also attended by a representative of the Renewable Energy Research Team of the CTU UCEEB, Bořivoj Šourek. The packed castle hall was proof that the topic is topical and important for the general public.

The importance of the SYNERGYS project goes far beyond the borders of Litoměřice. That is why it has become one of the strategic projects of the Operational Programme Just Transformation in the Ústí nad Labem Region. The main objective is to find out how to use ground heat even from great depths and how to combine it effectively with other renewable energy sources.

"That is why hydrogen and its production from solar energy is part of the research. Its production generates a lot of heat, but nobody wants it in the summer, so we will store it underground and in the winter we will take it out of here with heat pumps and use it for heating," described the project's principal investigator, Tomáš Fischer from the Faculty of Science at Charles University.

The Renewable Energy research team of the CTU UCEEB, which designed a complex energy system of above-ground technologies, is also involved in the realization of the stated goal. "The project is divided into a total of four sub-systems to cover most situations that can occur in real energy, whether it concerns energy sources or their size or the way they are used, for example in industrial areas, hospitals or district heating," said Bořivoj Šourek.

In addition to the city of Litoměřice, ENERGIE Holding, the operator of the local district heating network, is also an important partner of the project and should connect to the newly built heat sources at the very end. "This is, of course, the biggest benefit for the residents of the town and the institutions or companies connected to district heating, that we will be able to gradually replace coal with new, clean sources, but someone has to verify them in practice and prove under what conditions they are efficient, stable and safe in the long term so that we can use them in practice," agreed Radek Löwy, Mayor of Litoměřice, and Jan Nechvátal, Chairman of the Board of Directors of ENERGIE Holding.

News in the SYNERGYS project can be continuously monitored on the website www.rin-gen.cz. The closest opportunity to learn about its outputs on site will be during an open day to be held in early May 2025 at the RINGEN Research Centre in Jiřík Barracks.
